AniOnline (also known as AniOnline Network Simulator, or Anitaria) is a modern urban fantasy action/adventure story based on web 1.0 message boards, MMOs, JRPGs, as well as goth, punk, scene, and early 2000s anime/weeb subcultures. You take all those fantasy rpg games like the Tales series, Xenoblade, Dragon Quest, Lunar, etc. and add a bunch of teenage angst, rapid urbanization, 2000s pop culture, webcore, and frutiger aero.
Originally a website based on Gaia created in 2006 by a group of passionate and wonderful team of writers, artists, and community managers, it's spirit lives on for that odd person out there who still has that rebellious streak living inside them.

The World is currently divided into two macrocultures known as the Passive World and the Active World.
In the Passive World, social order is placed above all else. You go to school for twelve years, then college for another four, get a 9 to 5 job and try not to slowly rot away from the inside by occupying yourself with whatever entertainment you can get your hands on or committing to a religious institution to help convince yourself that things are fine just the way they are.
But in the active world, freedom is the most important thing a person can have. In these long stretches of land roam powerful monsters just waiting for someone to fight them, magic is not inhibited, and dungeons are open to be explored and exploited. Join a guild and do odd jobs around the Active World or engage in territory disputes. Take on personal quests like becoming the strongest, finding your lost ancestry, finding a gender-bending potion, joining the Vampire Queendom and becoming undead, and all those video games and anime haven't gone anywhere either.

But beware. There is a price for leaving the safety that conformity provides. Just as it was in the wild west, your life will be on the line every moment of every day should you dare venture out into these lands. Find some good friends as soon as you get here, because otherwise no one will be watching out for you.
